IMPORTANT: The information in this article is specific to Orchid version 1.12.7 or earlier. Equivalent instructions for Orchid versions 2.0.0 and above are available in the Orchid Core VMS User Guide in the chapter "Video Export".
Orchid exports video to a .mkv video file, which is a flexible, open standard video file format. Some standard video players, such as Windows Media Player, do not support this video container. However, it can be viewed in VLC (a free, open-source program) on any platform.
Note: This article only explains how to view video that has already been exported from Orchid. Feel free to read our article explaining how to export video if you’re trying to export video.
Install VLC
VLC is third-party software that is not installed by default. For specific information on how to install VLC on Windows, Linux, and Mac, feel free to read their thorough installation instructions:
https://wiki.videolan.org/Documentation:Installing_VLC/
The above link can walk you through installing the software on each operating system, and includes the needed installation files. However, if you’re using a Debian Linux distribution (such as Ubuntu), installing VLC is as simply as running the following command in the Terminal:
sudo apt-get install vlc
Play Video
Right click the exported video, hover over “Open With” with the mouse, and click VLC media player. The exported video should be in the default folder your web browser downloads to, which is usually the Downloads folder.
The exported video will start playing automatically, and the player’s controls can be used to pause, fast-forward, and rewind as needed.
